Art of the Good Dying Workshops
The experiential workshop of the Art of a Good Death is designed to discover what stands in the way of a good death. We explore and experience playful and practical approaches that help us feel mentally, emotionally and spiritually prepared to remain present through the losses of others, the loss of our loved ones and to feel prepared for our own losses and death.
The workshop was designed for each participant to experience an individual and collective journey of increased self-awareness and self-discovery toward greater personal well-being and fulfillment, and greater peace with life. The conversations and exercises throughout the workshop teach us how to transcend the collective denial of death and enter into a healthy, transformative relationship with our mortality.
Carlos Chancellor, Deputy Director of Education at EKR Mexico Centro, guided us through a symbolic journey through the nine levels of the Mictlán underworld, and what each of these levels means as they reflect the stages of our preparation for loss, death and new life.
Luisa Fernanda Ruiz Montiel, Deputy Director of the Advisory Council of EKR Mexico Center, addressed the myth that death is something to fear, and a guided conversation helped us understand the spell of death denial that the overculture has imposed on us.
Wilka Roig, president of the EKR Mexico Centro Foundation, guided us through the process of identifying and exploring unfinished and truncated issues, residual shame, guilt and regrets so that we can find closure, healing and resolution, Identify and appreciate the purpose of everything that has happened in our lives, and so we can come to a true position of unconditional love and gratitude for ourselves and the life we have lived.
Ian McCartor, a member of the EKR Mexico Centro Advisory Board, shared stories in which he helped to harvest wisdom and life purpose with dying patients, understanding and valuing the legacy we left behind. He delighted us with inherited songs inspired by his patients' stories.
